Travel Planning

Travel Planning forms a key part of the Government’s strategy to reduce unnecessary car use in order to achieve a reduction in congestion and carbon emissions. It is a tool by which users of a development, whether they be a resident, employee, football supporter or student can be encouraged to use alternative modes of transport, such as walking and cycling or, for longer journeys, public transport.

We offer a range of services that can help achieve a satisfactory solution for your development (or download our Travel Plans services sheet):

  • Travel Plans

Travel Plans are usually required to be agreed in advance of occupation with a range of measures and initiatives put forward. However, they can also be prepared for existing developments where proposals are being prepared for building expansion and loss of car parking.

  • Travel Surveys

Travel surveys are typically required in order to determine the travel patterns associated with the development and to help identify what measures and initiatives may be more successful. We offer an online travel survey capability and use Geographical Information Systems (GIS) to map the travel patterns and help identify those who could switch to walking, cycling or public transport as well as identify clusters for potential car sharing. The accessibility appraisals can assist in procuring a planning permission for development with reduced parking requirements if lower levels of traffic generation can be demonstrated.

  • Travel Plan Coordinator

Travel Plans are often conditioned in such a way that they become a long-term obligation that requires ongoing monitoring to assess their effectiveness. Annual surveys and progress reports are typically required to be submitted. We can act as the Travel Plan Coordinator for your development and organise surveys, reports and information updates throughout the life of the travel plan.
