School popular with geese

Easter opening for new school

Alder Grange Community and Technology School in Rawtenstall have opened a brand new 6th form building. The school is situated close to another and as such this expansion required careful planning with an emphasis on accessibility. The nursery, two schools and sixth form will eventually accommodate 1300 pupils on the site and so resolving the logistical issues was very important.

SCP worked closely with Hartington, Fleming & Worsley Architects on introducing the new building and on creating a layout accessible by cars, buses, delivery vehicles and those on foot. A solution was found by SCP which encompassed a ‘loop road’ around the edge of the existing site.

David Hampson, deputy head at Alder Grange said, “I am pleased to say that the loop road seems to be working brilliantly. The difference outside the schools is fantastic. It is delightful to see pupils using the crossings, and cars stopping. Also, we now regularly get pupils cycling to school, and it is not yet the Summer Term’.

The new arrangements have created a more relaxed and safer environment for parents, staff, local residents and most importantly pupils. Even the resident geese are taking advantage of the new crossings!
